Case IH 5113-19 - VCM – VCM: Loss of communication between the vehicle controller and the engine controller

The CAN bus data link between the VCM and the Engine Controller has timed out or failed.

   Verify that the Engine Controller is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground

   Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the VCM to the Engine Controller for chafing, pinch points, or melted insulation

3. 3

   Check the pins on both the VCM and Engine Controller connectors for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back pins

   With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms)

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing the electrical system.

   Locate modules

   Locate the VCM and the Engine Controller on the tractor.

   Clean and inspect connectors

   Disconnect the main harness connectors from both modules. Clean any dirt or corrosion using electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are bent.

   Test continuity

   Using a digital multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the VCM connector to the Engine Controller connector.

   Test for shorts

   Test the CAN lines for a short to ground or a short to power.

   Repair or replace wiring

   If a break or short is found in the wiring, repair the affected section of the harness or replace the harness entirely.

   Reconnect and clear codes

   Reconnect all modules, restore battery power, and clear the inactive fault codes using an EST (Electronic Service Tool) or compatible diagnostic scanner.

   Verify repair

   Turn the key to the ON position and verify if code 5113-19 returns. If the wiring is 100% intact and the code remains active, the Engine Controller or the VCM may have an internal CAN transceiver failure and will require replacement and reprogramming by a dealer.
