Case IH 51131 – AUX Controller: Invalid Software Instruction Executed

Issue description

This fault code indicates an internal software, firmware, or memory error within the control module. The controller attempted to process a command or logic instruction that it could not recognize or execute, which typically points to corrupted software, a transient voltage glitch causing a processing error, or an internal hardware failure within the module.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • MX Magnum Series
  • TG Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Cycle Power: Turn the tractor off, wait a few minutes, and turn it back on to see if the code is active or if it was a transient glitch.

  2. Voltage Check: Verify battery and charging system voltage. Low voltage or severe voltage spikes can cause controllers to misfire and log invalid software instructions.

  3. CAN Bus & EST Check: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check the status of the AUX controller and perform a CAN bus communication check to ensure the module is communicating properly with the rest of the tractor.

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Code

Use the EST or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu to clear the fault code. Cycle the key and operate the hydraulic remotes to see if the code returns.

  2. Reflash the Controller

If the code returns, the software on the AUX controller may be corrupted. Use the Case IH EST to reflash or update the firmware on the AUX controller.

  3. Replace the Controller

If the EST cannot communicate with the AUX controller, the reflash fails, or the code persists after a successful reflash, the controller has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  4. Calibrate

If the AUX controller is replaced, you must use the EST to calibrate the new controller and the remote levers (setting the extend, retract, and neutral positions) before the system will function properly.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • AUX Controller (Auxiliary Hydraulic Remote Controller)

Specific part numbers vary heavily depending on the exact tractor model (e.g., MX vs. Puma) and serial number break. You will need to pull the part number directly off the existing AUX controller or provide the machine's serial number to a Case IH dealer parts catalog to ensure correct fitment.
