Case IH 5118-13 - UCM – UCM: Incorrect trailer brake configuration
Issue description
The control module has detected a mismatch between the tractor's software configuration and the physical hardware present (e.g., the system is configured for a trailer brake valve, but one is not detected, or vice versa).
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Maxxum series
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Magnum series (e.g., MX200-270)
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac series
- Case IH CX and C Series (C50, C60, C70, C80, etc.)
Check the cause
Hardware Verification: Physically inspect the rear of the tractor and the hydraulic/pneumatic circuits to verify if a trailer brake valve is actually installed on the machine.
Harness and Connection Check: Inspect the wiring harness and spade connectors between the UCM and the trailer brake valve/controller for broken wires, corrosion, or disconnected terminals.
Software Check: Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to read the current UCM configuration and see what the trailer brake setting is currently programmed to.
Repair steps
Connect diagnostic tool
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Navigate to configuration
Navigate to the configuration screen for the Universal Control Module (UCM).
Locate setting
Locate the configuration line for the Trailer Brake Controller.
Change setting
Change the setting to match the physical hardware of the tractor: If the tractor has a trailer brake valve installed, set the configuration to 'Installed'. If the tractor does not have a trailer brake valve, ensure the configuration is set to 'Not Installed'.
Save setting
Save the new setting in the EST.
Restart tractor
Restart the tractor (cycle the key) to allow the UCM to reboot and recognize the new configuration.
Test and clear codes
Test the operation of the trailer brakes (if equipped) and clear the inactive fault codes from the UCM fault stack.
Replace faulty components
If the configuration is correct but the fault persists, the trailer brake valve itself or the wiring harness may be faulty and require replacement.
