Case IH 5118-19 - UCM – UCM: Trailer brake controller present, but not installed
Issue description
A hardware/software configuration mismatch where the system expects a module that is not physically installed, or a loss of CAN communication between the vehicle controller and the trailer brake module.
Applies to these machines
1 machine- MAGNUM AFS Connect
Check the cause
Hardware Verification: Physically inspect the tractor to determine if a trailer brake controller is actually installed.
Configuration Check: If the controller is not installed but code 5118-19 is active, check the UCM software configuration to see if the feature was accidentally enabled.
Communication Check: If the controller is installed and code 5118-13 is active, test the CAN communication network and wiring harness between the UCM and the trailer brake controller for open circuits, shorts, or high resistance.
Repair steps
Inspect the trailer brake controller and its wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, or disconnected plugs.
If the tractor is equipped with a trailer brake controller, repair or replace the damaged CAN communication lines between the trailer brake controller and the UCM to resolve the loss of communication (Code 5118-13).
If the tractor is NOT equipped with a trailer brake controller but the UCM is searching for it (Code 5118-19), connect the Case IH diagnostic tool, navigate to the UCM configuration menu, and update the software configuration to reflect that the trailer brake controller is 'Not Installed'.
Clear the fault codes from the UCM and cycle the ignition key to verify the communication/configuration error does not return.
