Case IH 5121 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Right Joystick Forward-Back Axis Pin A Open Or Shorted To Ground Or Power

This indicates an electrical circuit failure on the sensor that monitors the forward and backward movement of the right-hand joystick. The system has detected that the signal circuit on "Pin A" is either completely disconnected (open circuit), shorted to the machine's chassis (ground), or shorted to a voltage source (power).

   Visually inspect the wiring harness at the base of the right joystick for pinched wires, chafing against the console frame, or disconnected plugs.

   Disconnect the right joystick harness and inspect Pin A for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.

   Test the wire corresponding to Pin A for continuity between the joystick connector and the UCM harness connector.

   Check for a short to ground by testing resistance between Pin A and the machine chassis.

   Check for a short to power by turning the key ON and checking for unexpected voltage on the Pin A signal wire.

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly (no opens or shorts), isolate the fault to the joystick's internal Forward-Back axis potentiometer/Hall-effect sensor.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Joystick

   Remove the right-hand armrest or side console trim panels to expose the base of the right joystick assembly.

   Harness Repair

   If your diagnostic checks revealed a broken or shorted wire, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section, or replace the damaged connector pin.

   Replace the Joystick

   If the harness is intact, the joystick sensor has failed. Disconnect the main electrical connector at the base of the joystick. Unbolt the joystick base from the console mount and remove the unit.

   Install New Part

   Seat the new right joystick assembly into the console, secure the mounting bolts, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Reassembly & Calibration

   Reinstall the console trim and reconnect the battery. You will likely need to use the machine's in-cab display or an EST (Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive 5121 fault code and perform a joystick calibration procedure so the UCM can learn the new sensor's neutral, full-forward, and full-back voltage limits.
