Case IH 5124 – UCM (Universal Control Module) or Armrest Controller: Right Joystick Forward-Back Axis In-Range Fault

Issue description

The control module is receiving a signal from the right joystick's forward/backward axis sensor that falls within the normal electrical operating range, but the signal is erratic, illogical, or fails to match the expected calibration parameters.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Farmall
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Wheel Loaders
  • Axial-Flow series

Check the cause

  1. Perform joystick calibration via the in-cab display (e.g., AFS Pro monitor) to ensure the sensor is not simply out of calibration.

  2. Monitor live data using the diagnostic menu or an electronic service tool. Move the joystick slowly forward and backward to check if the voltage/percentage output sweeps smoothly. Look for erratic jumps or dead spots indicating internal sensor failure.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the base of the joystick for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or wire chafing that could cause high resistance.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, lower any attachments to the ground, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Remove the trim panels or armrest cover on the right-hand console to expose the base of the joystick assembly.

  3. Carefully disconnect the main electrical harness connector from the bottom of the joystick.

  4. Remove the mounting bolts or screws securing the joystick base to the armrest or console bracket.

  5. Remove the faulty joystick.

  6. Install the new joystick assembly and secure it with the mounting hardware.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks firmly into place.

  8. Reinstall the armrest trim panels.

  9. Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on.

  10. Navigate to the display monitor's calibration menu and perform a full joystick calibration.

Crucial Step: This ensures the UCM can learn the new sensor's center, maximum forward, and maximum backward voltage limits.
