Case IH 5131 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Right Joystick Right-Left Axis (ISO/H Pattern) Pin A Open Or Shorted To Ground
Issue description
The control module is not receiving the expected voltage signal from the right-hand joystick's right-left axis sensor. The system has detected that the circuit on "Pin A" is either completely broken (open circuit) or the wire is chafed and touching the machine's chassis (shorted to ground).
Applies to these machines
3 machines- skid steer
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness exiting the base of the right joystick for pinch points, chafed insulation, or severed wires caused by cab movement or operator interference.
Disconnect the harness at the right joystick and inspect Pin A and the corresponding socket for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture intrusion.
Using a multimeter, test the wire corresponding to Pin A from the joystick connector back to the UCM for continuity (to rule out an open circuit) and continuity to ground (to rule out a short to ground).
If the harness tests good, test the internal right-left axis sensor (potentiometer or Hall-effect sensor) of the joystick.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Access the Harness
Remove the side console or boot cover at the base of the right joystick to access the electrical connections.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken or shorted wire on the Pin A circuit, splice and solder the wire, sealing it with heat-shrink tubing. If the connector is damaged, replace the pigtail connector.
Replace Joystick
If the wiring and UCM are verified to be in good working order, the internal axis sensor of the joystick has failed. Disconnect the main electrical connector for the right joystick, unbolt the joystick assembly from the mounting console, install the new joystick assembly and secure the mounting hardware, and reconnect the electrical harness.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use the electronic service tool (EST) or the instrument cluster to clear the inactive 5131 fault code. Test the right-left axis movement to ensure hydraulic functions have been restored.
Parts you might need
(2)Right Joystick Assembly (Electro-Hydraulic / EH Control Handle)
When ordering, you must specify if the machine is programmed for ISO or H-pattern controls, as well as the exact model and serial number.
Right Joystick Harness Connector
If the fault is isolated to a corroded pin.
