Case IH 5141 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Aux Thumbwheel Axis Pin A Open Or Shorted To Ground
Issue description
This code indicates a circuit failure—either a broken wire (open circuit) or a wire rubbing against the chassis (short to ground)—on Pin A of the auxiliary hydraulic control thumbwheel circuit. When this code is active, the machine's auxiliary hydraulics are automatically disabled for safety.

Check the cause
Connect the EST: Verify that code 5141 is active in the UCM.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading from the UCM to the joystick (specifically the right-hand joystick where the aux thumbwheel is usually located).
Pin A Circuit Test: Check the specific wire for Pin A on the thumbwheel connector. Look for pinched wires, rubbed insulation causing a short to the metal frame, or backed-out pins in the connector.
Continuity Test: Use a multimeter to test Pin A for continuity to ground (to confirm a short) or infinite resistance from end-to-end (to confirm an open circuit).
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Harness
Remove the side console or armrest covers to access the base of the joystick and its wiring harness.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a damaged wire or connector on Pin A, splice/repair the wire or replace the damaged connector pin.
Replace Joystick
If the harness and connectors test perfectly fine, the internal potentiometer/sensor of the thumbwheel itself has failed. Remove the mounting bolts for the joystick, disconnect the main harness, and install a replacement joystick assembly.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the EST to clear the inactive 5141 fault code.
Test Operation
Verify that the auxiliary hydraulics have been re-enabled and function smoothly without throwing the code again.
