Case IH 5142 – UCM: Aux Thumbwheel Axis Pin A Shorted To Power

The control module is detecting an abnormally high voltage on the signal circuit (Pin A) of the auxiliary hydraulic thumbwheel sensor located on the joystick. A 'Shorted to Power' condition means the signal wire is receiving full reference voltage (e.g., 5V) or battery voltage (12V), either due to a wiring short or an internal failure of the thumbwheel's potentiometer/Hall-effect sensor.

   Visual Inspection: Remove the joystick boot and inspect the wiring harness exiting the joystick base for pinched, chafed, or bare wires touching a power source.

   Connector Check: Disconnect the joystick harness from the main cab harness and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals that could bridge power and signal pins.

   Harness Voltage Test: With the joystick disconnected and the key ON, use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage on the 'Pin A' signal wire on the machine side of the harness. If it reads 5V or 12V, the short to power is in the machine's wiring harness between the joystick connector and the UCM.

   Sensor Test: If the machine-side harness tests normal (no voltage on the signal wire when disconnected), the short is internal to the joystick handle/thumbwheel assembly.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes to the UCM.

   Access the Base

   Remove the rubber boot and the side console trim surrounding the affected joystick to expose the mounting hardware and electrical connectors.

   Disconnect the Joystick

   Unplug the electrical connector linking the joystick to the UCM harness.

   Remove the Handle

   Remove the set screws or mounting bolts securing the joystick handle to the base valve/gimbal assembly.

   Install the New Part

   Mount the replacement joystick handle. Carefully route the new wiring harness to ensure it will not be pinched or stretched when the joystick is moved to its maximum travel limits.

   Reconnect and Test

   Plug in the electrical connector, reinstall the boot/trim, and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key ON. Verify that the white warning indicator is no longer active and test the auxiliary hydraulics for proper proportional control. Clear the inactive 5142 code from the UCM using the instrument cluster menu or a diagnostic service tool.
