Case IH 5147 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Aux Thumbwheel Axis In-Range Fault

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the auxiliary hydraulic thumbwheel (located on the joystick), but the signal is outside of the expected or calibrated parameters. This indicates the sensor's neutral position has likely drifted, the potentiometer/hall-effect sensor is failing, or there is a partial resistance issue in the wiring.

   Check the auxiliary thumbwheel on the joystick for smooth movement and ensure it springs back to the exact center (neutral) position without sticking or debris jamming it.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the joystick and the UCM for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture.

   Using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or advanced instrument cluster display, monitor the live voltage of the Aux Thumbwheel Axis for erratic voltage jumps when rolling the wheel.

   Attempt to recalibrate the joystick and auxiliary thumbwheel using the EST to correct a drifted neutral baseline.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, lower the boom to the ground, and disconnect the battery to ensure safety.

   Clean and Reconnect

   Disconnect the joystick harness connector. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect it.

   Recalibrate

   Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST). Navigate to the UCM calibration menu and execute the auxiliary thumbwheel/joystick calibration procedure.

   Test

   Clear the 5147 fault code. Operate the auxiliary thumbwheel to see if the code returns.

   Replace Component

   If the calibration fails, or if the live data showed erratic voltage sweeps indicating a failed internal sensor, the joystick handle assembly must be replaced.

   Final Calibration

   After installing the new joystick assembly, you must perform the joystick calibration procedure again so the UCM learns the new sensor's exact voltage range.
