Case IH 516628-31 - PCM – PCM: ECU - internal check procedures
Issue description
The control module has failed its internal self-diagnostic checks. The underlying condition is typically an internal hardware failure, a memory/processor fault, or an Input/Output circuit failure within the module itself.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum AFS Connect Tractors (Models 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
- Steiger AFS Connect Tractors
- Optum and Puma AFS Connect Tractors
- Axial-Flow 260 Series Combines
- Patriot 50 Series Sprayers
Check the cause
Power Cycle: Turn the machine off, wait for the modules to fully power down, and turn the key back on to see if the internal check error was a temporary glitch.
Inspect Wiring & Connectors: Check the multi-pin connectors at the PCM. Look for backed-out pins, moisture intrusion, or corrosion, which can cause I/O errors.
Verify Voltage: Test the power and ground circuits feeding the PCM. Low voltage or a poor ground can cause the module's processor to fail its internal self-checks.
Software Check: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Check if there is a software update or reflash available for the PCM, as firmware bugs can trigger false hardware codes.
If power, ground, and software are all verified and the code remains active, the PCM has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during module replacement.
Locate the PCM
Access the Processing & Connectivity Module (location varies by cab, often found under the instructional seat or behind the rear cab trim).
Disconnect the Module
Carefully unplug the main wiring harness connectors. Disconnect the coaxial antenna cables (4G/Cellular, GPS/GNSS, and WLAN).
Remove the PCM
Unbolt the mounting hardware and remove the faulty module.
Install the New PCM
Mount the replacement PCM and secure it with the bolts.
Reconnect
Reconnect all antenna cables (ensure they are threaded on securely but not overtightened) and plug in the main wiring harnesses.
Restore Power
Reconnect the machine's battery.
Programming
Connect the Case IH EST laptop. The new PCM is blank and must be flashed with the correct machine software. You will also need to provision the modem so it can communicate with the Case IH AFS Connect / FieldOps network.
Clear Codes
Clear all stored fault codes and cycle the key to verify that 516628-31 does not return.
