Case IH 517060-09 - ITBV – ITBV: Trailer brake controller communication fault with vehicle controller

The Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (ITBC) or Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) has lost Controller Area Network (CAN bus) communication with the tractor's main vehicle controller, preventing the module from modulating power and timing to the trailer brakes.

   Inspect the 7-Pin Connector: Check the vehicle-side receptacle and trailer plug for corrosion, dirt, or bent pins, which can cause a false failure or short.

   Verify Ground Connections: Ensure the ground wire connecting to the negative battery terminal and the chassis ground on both the tractor and the trailer are clean, tight, and rust-free.

   Check Power Supply and Fuses: Verify the controller is receiving power. Inspect the fuse box for blown fuses and check the wiring running from the controller to the battery for frays or loose connections.

   CAN Bus & Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the ITBV and the vehicle's CAN bus network. Look for open circuits, shorts to ground, or damaged wiring that would interrupt the communication signal.

   Test Brake Output Voltage: Check the voltage at the output pin. Note that some vehicles automatically limit the output gain if the vehicle is parked, which can result in a low voltage reading.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

   Clean and Repair Connections

   Use electrical contact cleaner to clean the 7-pin trailer connector and the harness connectors at the ITBV module. Repair any damaged ground wires or CAN bus wires.

   Test the System

   Reconnect the battery and connect a known-good trailer (or a trailer simulator/tester) to see if the communication fault clears and the brakes engage (listen for magnetic engagement/clicking at the trailer wheels).

   Replace the ITBV Module

   If the wiring, grounds, and fuses are intact but the module still fails to communicate with the vehicle controller, the ITBV module itself has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Install New Module

   Disconnect the electrical harness (and hydraulic lines if replacing the full valve assembly), unbolt the faulty ITBV, and install the replacement unit.

   Clear Codes

   Use the Case IH EASy or EST diagnostic tool to clear the 517060-09 fault code from the system and calibrate the new module if required.
