Case IH 517062-09 - ITBV – Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) ECU / Body Control Module (BCM) / Universal Control Module (UCM): Trailer brake controller communication fault with vehicle controller

Abnormal update rate, meaning there is a CAN bus communication timeout or loss of signal. The main vehicle controller is no longer receiving expected CAN messages from the Trailer Brake Controller (iTBV) ECU.

   Verify if other modules are reporting CAN bus communication errors. If multiple modules are offline, the issue is likely a central CAN bus wiring fault rather than the iTBV itself.

   Inspect the pneumatic trailer brake wire harness (Part # 48127417) connecting the iTBV ECU to the main vehicle harness. Look for chafed wires, pinched lines, or shorts to ground/power.

   Disconnect the iTBV ECU and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pushed-out terminals.

   Check the software version of the iTBV. It should be running software version 1.3.0.0 (Software Part Number 51595354). A software re-flash may be required if the module has corrupted programming.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the CAN bus system.

   Locate the iTBV

   Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve and ECU assembly, typically mounted near the rear remote valves or under the rear cab support.

   Inspect and Test Wiring

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the iTBV ECU. Use a multimeter to test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for continuity back to the Body Control Module. Verify that the ECU is receiving proper voltage and ground.

   Replace the ECU/Valve (if wiring is good)

   If the wiring harness passes all tests and the ECU will not communicate, the iTBV ECU has failed internally.

   Disconnect Lines

   Carefully disconnect the hydraulic tubes (e.g., the tube from the shuttle valve to the iTBV and the pipe from the iTBV to the solenoid valve). Cap the lines to prevent contamination.

   Swap the Module

   Remove the protective cover (Part # 48029746) and unbolt the iTBV ECU. Install the replacement ECU.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect all hydraulic lines and the electrical harness.

   Calibration/Programming

   Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the new iTBV ECU with the correct software (Part # 51595354) and clear the 517062-09 fault code from the vehicle controller's memory.
