Case IH 517082-09 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve / Trailer Brake Control): Trailer brake controller communication fault with the vehicle controller
Issue description
The main vehicle controller has lost CAN bus communication with the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve module.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Tractors (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Case IH Farmall
Check the cause
Check system voltage to verify the tractor is not experiencing an overvoltage or undervoltage condition, which can cause the ITBV to drop off the CAN network.
Inspect the ITBV electrical connector and wiring harness for corrosion, backed-out pins, or physical damage.
Use a multimeter to verify the integrity of the CAN High and CAN Low communication lines between the ITBV and the vehicle controller.
Verify the software version of the Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) to determine if a software update is required to resolve communication glitches.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during testing.
Locate the ITBV
Find the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve assembly on the chassis (typically near the rear pneumatic/hydraulic trailer brake outputs).
Perform Wiring Repairs
If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or poor pin fitment at the ITBV connector, repair the harness or replace the connector terminal pins.
Replace the ITBV (If Faulty)
If power, ground, and CAN bus continuity are all verified as good but the module still fails to communicate, the ITBV module has failed internally. Disconnect the air/hydraulic lines (e.g., the ITBV to Solenoid Valve tube) and unbolt the valve assembly.
Install New Valve
Mount the replacement ITBV, reconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic lines, and plug in the electrical harness.
Reprogramming
Reconnect the battery. A new ITBV will likely require dealer calibration/software flashing (using the CNH EST diagnostic tool) to pair it with the vehicle controller and configure the trailer brake settings.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the 517082-09 fault code and perform a test drive to ensure the trailer brake system activates properly without logging communication timeouts.
