517205-09 - ITBV

Case IH 517205-09 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve) ECU: Trailer Brake Controller Communication Fault with Vehicle Controller

Issue description

The main vehicle controller has lost CAN bus communication with the ITBV module, or the messages are timing out. This indicates a breakdown in communication between the ITBV module and the main Vehicle Controller / Body Control Module (BCM).

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 180
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 200
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 220
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 240
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 250
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 280
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 310
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 340
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 380

Check the cause

  1. Check the software version of the Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) to ensure it is running the correct software (e.g., software version 1.3.0.0; part number 51595354)

  2. Verify system voltage, as System Overvoltage or Undervoltage (TRM30) can trigger communication timeouts (CAN RX message timeout) and drop the ITBV offline

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ITBV to the vehicle controller, specifically checking the ITBV wire connectors (such as the X-386F connector and dust cap) for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins

  4. Verify that the tractor's ECU is correctly configured for the trailer brake system, as an Incorrect Trailer Brake Configuration can also cause communication faults

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the CAN bus system.

  2. Inspect and Clean Connections

Locate the ITBV ECU and pneumatic valve assembly. Disconnect the main wiring harness. Clean the contacts with electronic cleaner and ensure the weather seals on the connectors are intact.

  3. Test CAN Bus Continuity

Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the ITBV connector to ensure the wiring to the vehicle controller is not open or shorted.

  4. Update Software

If the wiring is intact, connect the OEM diagnostic tool (e.g., CNH EST) and flash the ITBV and Vehicle Controller to the latest software versions.

  5. Replace the ITBV ECU

If software updates and wiring repairs do not restore communication, the ITBV ECU itself has failed internally and must be replaced.

  6. Calibrate

After replacing the ECU or pneumatic valves, use the diagnostic tool to perform the trailer brake calibration procedure so the new module can handshake with the vehicle controller.
