Case IH 517205-10 - ITBV – Trailer Brake Control module (ITBV): Trailer Brake Controller Communication Fault with Vehicle Controller
Issue description
This fault indicates a loss of CAN bus communication or a data error between the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) controller and the main vehicle controller, preventing the tractor from verifying the status or commanding the trailer brakes properly.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Tractors (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Case IH Farmall 40, 45, and 50 Tractors with Cab and CVT Transmission
Check the cause
Check the two 15 Amp fuses (permanent and switched battery power) supplying the ITBV
Inspect the X-386F wiring connector at the ITBV for corrosion, pushed pins, or a missing dust cap
Verify the software versions of the Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) and Driveline Electronic Control (DEC) modules
Repair steps
Test fuses
Locate the fuse panel and test the two 15A fuses dedicated to the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (permanent and switched power). Replace if blown.
Disconnect connector
Locate the ITBV pneumatic valve assembly on the tractor. Disconnect the main electrical connector (X-386F).
Inspect and clean connector
Inspect the connector pins for moisture, corrosion, or damage. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.
Inspect wiring harness
Trace the CAN bus wiring harness from the ITBV back to the main vehicle controller, looking for chafed wires, pinch points, or ground shorts. Repair any damaged wiring.
Update software
If the physical wiring and power supply are intact, connect a diagnostic tool and check for software updates for the Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) and DEC modules. Flash the modules to the latest software version.
Replace ITBV assembly
If the fault remains active after verifying power, ground, CAN continuity, and software, the ITBV controller/valve assembly has failed internally and must be replaced.
Clear codes and test
Clear the fault codes (12861/12862) and perform a test drive to verify trailer brake operation and ensure the communication fault does not return.
