Case IH 517207-09 - ITBV – Vehicle Controller: Trailer brake controller communication fault with vehicle controller

Loss of CAN bus communication or an 'Abnormal Update Rate' between the tractor's main vehicle controller and the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV). The vehicle controller is no longer receiving the expected data messages from the trailer brake controller.

   Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness and connectors routing to the ITBV for improper routing, overly tight zip-ties, or tension pulling wires loose.

   Check for active system voltage faults (System Overvoltage or Undervoltage) that could cause the ITBV module to temporarily shut down.

   Verify the software version of the Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) module and the Vehicle Controller to ensure they are up to date.

   Relieve Tension

   If the wiring harness at the ITBV connector is overly tight, cut the clipping points/zip-ties to allow slack in the harness.

   Repair Wiring

   Repair any damaged CAN wires or replace damaged terminal pins at the ITBV connector. Re-secure the harness with adequate slack to prevent re-occurrence.

   Software Flash

   If the wiring is intact, flash the ITBV ECU and the Vehicle Controller with the latest software calibration using the OEM diagnostic tool.

   Module Replacement

   If communication cannot be restored and power/ground to the ITBV are verified good, replace the ITBV Electronic Control Unit (ECU) or the complete pneumatic valve assembly.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the fault codes and perform a test drive to ensure the ITBV communicates properly and trailer braking functions normally.
