Case IH 517207-10 - ITBV – Trailer Brake Control (iTBV): Trailer brake controller communication fault with vehicle controller

The main vehicle controller (often the Body Control Module or Driveline Electronic Control) has lost CAN bus communication with the trailer brake control module, or the messages being received are timing out or corrupted.

   Check the CAN RX/TX messages between the vehicle controller and the iTBV module for CAN timeout errors or message corruption.

   Verify that the iTBV module is receiving proper voltage, as system overvoltage (TRM30) or undervoltage can trigger communication dropouts.

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the iTBV to the main vehicle controller for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion at the connector pins.

   Check the current software version on the iTBV module to ensure it is not a known software glitch requiring a re-flash.

   Disconnect Battery

   Always disconnect the battery before servicing CAN bus modules or electrical valves.

   Inspect/Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks reveal an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power on the CAN lines, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.

   Check Power/Ground to iTBV

   Ensure the iTBV module has a solid ground and is receiving standard operating voltage. Clean any corroded ground terminals.

   Replace the iTBV Valve/Solenoid

   If the wiring, power, and ground are all intact but the module still fails to communicate, the internal circuitry of the iTBV valve/solenoid has likely failed. Remove the hydraulic lines and electrical connectors from the faulty ITBV valve, unbolt it from its mounting bracket, and install the new valve.

   Software Flash/Configuration

   If a new module is installed, it must be configured to the tractor. Flash the module with the correct OEM software (e.g., software part number 51595354 for AFS Connect Magnums).
