Case IH 517646-02 - VCM – VCM: Loss of communication between the vehicle controller and the monitor

Issue description

The Vehicle Control Module has lost its Controller Area Network (CAN) communication link with the cab display/monitor. This means the VCM is unable to send or receive data to the operator's screen.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery and system voltage, as low voltage can cause modules to drop off the network or fail to broadcast their IDs properly.

  2. Check CAN bus integrity by inspecting the wiring harness connecting the VCM to the AFS Pro display monitor.

  3. Inspect connectors at the VCM and the display monitor for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing the electrical system.

  2. Disconnect harness connectors

Locate the VCM and the cab monitor display. Disconnect their main harness connectors.

  3. Test CAN wires

Use a multimeter to test the CAN High and CAN Low wires for continuity between the VCM and the monitor. Repair any open or shorted wires in the harness.

  4. Clear fault codes

Clear the inactive/pending fault codes and cycle the key to verify the communication is restored and the codes do not return.
