517959-04 - DEC

Case IH 517959-04 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Transmission/Chassis ECM: Transmission A2 Clutch Solenoid Voltage Below Normal

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical voltage on the Transmission A2 clutch solenoid circuit has dropped below the acceptable operating range, which typically indicates a short circuit to ground, a failed solenoid coil, or a severely degraded connection.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the A2 clutch solenoid, the wiring harness, and the hardware for any apparent physical damage, melting, or chafing

  2. Verify that all harness connectors involved in the A2 clutch circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition

  3. Disconnect the solenoid and test the signal circuit wire back to the ECM to check for a short to ground

  4. With the key switch ON, measure the voltage at the solenoid harness connector (from the supply contact to the return contact) to verify the ECM is sending the correct operating voltage

Repair steps

  1. Turn off power

Turn the machine's disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position before beginning electrical repairs.

  2. Repair wiring

If the diagnostic tests reveal a short to ground in the wiring harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness.

  3. Remove faulty solenoid

If the wiring and ECM voltage are correct but the solenoid itself is internally shorted, remove the retaining hardware on the transmission control valve block and extract the faulty A2 clutch solenoid.

  4. Install replacement solenoid

Install the replacement solenoid and torque to the manufacturer's specifications.

  5. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect all harness connectors securely.

  6. Test machine

Turn the disconnect switch and key start switch ON, start the engine, and run the machine at high idle.

  7. Verify repair

Check the diagnostic display to determine if the FMI-04 DTC is still active. If the code is inactive, the repair is successful; clear the historical codes and resume machine operation.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission A2 Clutch Solenoid

Solenoids are highly specific to the transmission valve body revision. You will need to reference the specific machine's serial number in the CNH parts catalog to obtain the exact replacement solenoid cartridge.
