Case IH 517959-05 - DEC – DEC: Transmission A2 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault current below normal

Issue description

The control module is commanding the A2 transmission clutch solenoid to activate, but it is detecting little to no electrical current flowing through the circuit. This almost always indicates an open circuit, which is typically caused by a disconnected plug, a broken wire in the harness, or a burned-out (open) solenoid coil.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the A2 clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block for chafing, rodent damage, or pinched wires.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the A2 clutch solenoid and check for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture inside the connector.

  3. Perform a solenoid coil resistance test using a multimeter across the two pins of the A2 clutch solenoid. An 'OL' (Open Loop) reading indicates a broken internal coil.

  4. Perform a harness continuity test on the power and ground wires running from the DEC module to the solenoid connector to locate any breaks in the wiring.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and turn off the battery disconnect switch. Ensure all hydraulic pressure is relieved.

  2. Access the Valve Block

    Clean the area around the transmission control valve block thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the A2 clutch solenoid.

  4. Removal

    Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the electromagnetic coil off the hydraulic cartridge. (Note: If the cartridge itself is leaking or sticking, you may need to unthread the entire cartridge from the valve block).

  5. Installation

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the cartridge stem.

  6. Torque Specifications

    Do not over-torque the components. The solenoid retaining nut should be tightened to approximately 5-6 ft-lbs. If replacing the inner hydraulic cartridge, torque it to approximately 18 ft-lbs.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness plug.

  8. Calibration

    Turn the battery switch back on. Clear the DEC fault codes using the tractor's AFS Pro monitor or a diagnostic service tool. You may need to perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure so the DEC can learn the fill times for the new A2 solenoid.
