Case IH 517959-13 - DEC – DEC: Transmission A2 clutch solenoid is out of calibration

The transmission controller uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to precisely control the fill time and hold pressure of the clutch packs. When this code is logged, the controller lacks valid calibration data for the A2 clutch. This can result in harsh shifting, failure to engage the gear associated with the A2 clutch, or the tractor lunging and aborting calibration modes.

   Verify that the transmission hydraulic fluid (Hy-Tran) is at the correct level and is not burnt or contaminated.

   Ensure the tractor transmission is warmed up to normal operating temperature, as calibrations will fail if the oil is too cold.

   Attempt to run a full transmission calibration, as the code often appears because a calibration was interrupted, a software update wiped the memory, or clutch wear exceeded learned parameters.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the A2 clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block for rubbed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Measure the resistance of the A2 clutch solenoid coil to ensure it is within specification and check that it is receiving the proper voltage signal from the DEC.

   Warm Up the Tractor

   Operate the tractor until the transmission fluid reaches the required calibration temperature (usually above 120°F / 50°C).

   Enter Calibration Mode

   Access the transmission calibration menu through the AFS Pro 1200 display or the tractor's diagnostic menu.

   Run Calibration

   Follow the on-screen prompts to perform the automatic transmission clutch calibration. The DEC will pulse the solenoids to learn the fill times and engagement points.

   Monitor for Failure

   If the tractor lunges, drops engine RPM excessively, or throws an "F" (Fault) and aborts the calibration specifically on the A2 clutch, the solenoid is likely sticking or the internal clutch pack has failed.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If electrical tests or calibration failures point to the A2 solenoid, relieve hydraulic pressure, clean the area around the transmission valve body, and remove the A2 clutch PWM solenoid.

   Install New Solenoid

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block. Torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.

   Re-Calibrate

   You must perform the transmission calibration procedure again so the DEC can learn the flow characteristics of the new solenoid.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the 517959-13 fault code from the DEC memory and test drive the tractor to verify smooth shifting.
