517959-16 - DEC

Case IH 517959-16 - DEC – DEC: Transmission A2 clutch solenoid circuit - Current above normal

Issue description

Fault code 517959-16 indicates a fault in the electrical circuit of the Transmission A2 clutch solenoid. The A2 clutch solenoid circuit is drawing current that is above the normal operating range, which typically points to an internal short in the solenoid coil, a short circuit in the wiring harness, or a failing component drawing excessive amperage.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the DEC module to the transmission control valve block for rubbed, melted, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground or power.

  2. Disconnect the A2 clutch solenoid connector and check for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the A2 clutch solenoid coil to check for an internal short (resistance significantly lower than OEM spec).

  4. Connect a diagnostic tool to check if the fault is active and returns immediately upon key-on or when a transmission shift is commanded.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Safely park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the transmission control valve manifold on the side of the transmission housing where the A2 clutch solenoid is mounted.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the A2 solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or bolt that secures the solenoid coil to the valve stem.

  4. Replacement

Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (If the valve cartridge itself is sticking or damaged, the entire solenoid valve assembly may need to be unthreaded and replaced). Install the new solenoid coil/valve and torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather-pack seal is seated correctly. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

Connect the Case IH diagnostic software. Clear the 517959-16 fault code. Because a transmission control component was replaced, you must perform a DEC transmission calibration to ensure the controller learns the fill times and engagement characteristics of the new A2 clutch solenoid.
