517959-17 - DEC

Case IH 517959-17 - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Transmission A2 clutch solenoid minimum calibration current limit exceeded.

Issue description

The transmission controller measured the electrical current required to actuate the A2 clutch solenoid during a calibration routine and found it to be outside the acceptable parameters (too little current was required to apply the clutch pack, or the current limit was exceeded without a successful calibration solution). This prevents the transmission from properly learning the clutch fill volume and engagement point. It is typically caused by low regulated hydraulic pressure, a failing or shorted A2 clutch solenoid valve, wiring harness issues, or internal physical issues such as excessive backlash or worn clutch discs.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series (Magnum 180, 200, 240, 340, 400)
  • Case IH Puma Series (130, 145, 150, 165, 240)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Fluid Temperature Check: Ensure the transmission oil is thoroughly warmed to normal operating temperature.

  2. Hydraulic Pressure Test: Check the regulated transmission pressure (e.g., approximately 2300 kPa at 1500 RPM).

  3. Accumulator Check: Check the nitrogen charge on the regulated circuit accumulator.

  4. Wiring & Continuity Inspection: Remove the controller cover, visually inspect the wiring harness from the transmission controller to the solenoids, and check for circuit continuity, voltage, and current.

  5. Resistance Test: Disconnect the transmission controller connectors and measure the resistance of the A2 clutch solenoid circuit to ensure it is not shorted to power or ground.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

Locate the transmission hydraulic control valve block (typically mounted on the side or top of the transmission housing, accessible from under the cab).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connector from the A2 clutch solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

Remove the retaining bolts or clips holding the A2 solenoid to the valve block. Pull the solenoid straight out.

  5. Inspect the Spool Valve

Inspect the bore and the spool valve for any metal debris, scoring, or sticking. Clean the area thoroughly.

  6. Install the New Solenoid

Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and torque the retaining bolts to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect Wiring

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Recalibrate

Start the tractor and warm the transmission fluid to operating temperature. Enter the "TRANS SETUP" menu on the tractor's display (or use the Electronic Service Tool - EST) and initiate the transmission clutch calibration procedure. Ensure the calibration completes without throwing the 517959-17 error.
