Case IH 517960-03 - DEC – Transmission TCU (Transmission Control Unit): Transmission A1 clutch solenoid - Voltage above normal, or shorted to high source

Issue description

The controller has detected that the electrical circuit for the A1 clutch solenoid has a voltage reading higher than the normal operating range. This usually indicates a short circuit to a power source (battery voltage) in the wiring harness, an internal short within the solenoid coil, or an open circuit that causes the controller's diagnostic pin to float high.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission TCU to the transmission control valve block for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to battery power.

  2. Disconnect the A1 clutch solenoid and the TCU connectors to check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins which can bridge circuits.

  3. With the battery connected and the key ON (engine off), use a multimeter to measure the voltage on the signal wire at the solenoid connector. If battery voltage is present when the TCU is not commanding the clutch, there is a short to power in the harness.

  4. Measure the resistance across the pins of the A1 clutch solenoid and compare the reading to OEM specifications to determine if the solenoid coil is internally shorted or open.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Locate the Component

    Locate the transmission control valve block on the side or top of the transmission housing and identify the A1 clutch solenoid.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the A1 solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or snap rings securing the solenoid to the valve body.

  4. Extract and Clean

    Carefully pull the solenoid out of the valve block. Clean the mounting bore in the valve body, ensuring no debris enters the transmission hydraulic circuits.

  5. Prepare the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new replacement solenoid with clean, OEM-approved transmission hydraulic fluid.

  6. Installation

    Insert the new solenoid into the valve block. Install the retaining bolts and torque them to the manufacturer's specified torque value.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Calibration

    Connect a diagnostic service tool to clear the 517960-03 fault code. You may need to perform a transmission clutch calibration (fill time/pressure calibration) so the TCU can learn the engagement characteristics of the new A1 solenoid.
