Case IH 517960-04 - DEC – TCU: A1 Clutch Solenoid Voltage Below Normal

Issue description

The Transmission Control Unit (TCU) has detected that the voltage in the A1 clutch solenoid electrical circuit is below normal. This typically indicates a short to ground, an open circuit, or an internally failed solenoid coil, preventing the controller from properly operating the A1 clutch.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 280 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 310 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 340 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 380 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the transmission control valve block for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corrosion.

  2. Disconnect the A1 clutch solenoid and measure the resistance across the coil pins (should be approximately 8.5 Ohms).

  3. Test the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the TCU for continuity, ensuring there is no short to the chassis ground.

  4. Check the transmission fluid level and condition to ensure debris is not causing mechanical sticking.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate A1 clutch solenoid

Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing and identify the A1 clutch solenoid.

  3. Remove faulty solenoid

Disconnect the electrical harness, remove the retaining bolts or snap rings, and carefully pull the solenoid out of the bore. Clean the mating surface on the valve body, ensuring no dirt enters the hydraulic circuit.

  4. Install new solenoid

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Case IH Hy-Tran transmission fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid into the bore and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  5. Reconnect electricals

Plug the electrical harness back into the solenoid and reconnect the tractor battery.

  6. Clear codes and calibrate

Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 517960-04 fault code. You must perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure after replacing a transmission solenoid. Ensure the transmission fluid is up to operating temperature before running the calibration, or the clutches will not engage smoothly.
