Case IH 517960-05 - DEC – DEC: Transmission A1 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault - current below normal (or open circuit)

Issue description

The control module is commanding the A1 clutch solenoid to actuate, but it is not detecting the expected electrical current returning through the circuit. This condition is almost always caused by a physical break in the circuit, such as a disconnected plug, a broken/chafed wire in the harness, pushed-back connector pins, or a burnt-out (open) solenoid coil.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the A1 clutch solenoid for obvious signs of damage, chafing, or rodent damage.

  2. Disconnect the A1 solenoid plug and check for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins inside the connector.

  3. Measure the resistance across the two pins of the A1 solenoid using a digital multimeter. A reading of 'OL' (Open Loop) indicates the internal coil has failed.

  4. Disconnect the harness at the DEC module and test the wires between the DEC and the solenoid connector for continuity and shorts to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the exterior of the transmission valve block around the A1 solenoid with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the A1 solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt, bracket, or snap-ring holding the solenoid cartridge in the valve block.

  4. Extract the Cartridge

    Carefully pull the solenoid straight out of the bore. Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out.

  5. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Case IH Hy-Tran (or equivalent) transmission fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid into the bore, ensuring the O-rings are not pinched.

  6. Secure and Reconnect

    Reinstall the retaining bracket/bolt and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks securely.

  7. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery and turn the key on. Use the AFS Pro monitor or a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive 517960-05 fault code.

  8. Transmission Calibration

    Because a clutch control component was replaced, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure via the monitor to ensure the DEC learns the engagement characteristics of the new A1 solenoid.
