Case IH 517960-06 - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Transmission A1 clutch solenoid electrical current above normal or grounded circuit
Issue description
The controller has detected an abnormally high electrical current draw on the A1 clutch solenoid circuit. This is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, moisture/mud contamination in the connector, or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause
Scan and Record: Connect a diagnostic scan tool to read and record freeze-frame data and verify if any other transmission codes (such as low system voltage or communication errors) are present.
Visual Inspection of Connectors: Locate the transmission valve block. On models like the Puma and Magnum, these connectors are accessible from beneath the cab and are highly prone to mud and moisture contamination. Inspect the A1 solenoid connector for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Wiring Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness routing from the TCM to the transmission valve block for chafing, melting, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.
Coil Resistance Test: With the ignition off, disconnect the A1 clutch solenoid connector. Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins using a multimeter. Typical transmission solenoid coil resistance is commonly ~10-30 ohms (compare to your specific model's factory spec). If the resistance is near zero, the solenoid is internally shorted and must be replaced.
Circuit Supply Test: Backprobe the connector while commanding the clutch on/off (if supported by the scan tool) to observe if the TCM is sending the correct voltage/PWM signal.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Valve Block
Clean the area around the transmission valve block (usually located under the cab) thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during removal.
Remove the Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical connector from the A1 clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt/bracket holding the solenoid in the valve block.
Extract and Inspect
Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body. Inspect the bore for debris or hydraulic contamination.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and torque the retaining hardware to the manufacturer's specification.
Reconnect and Clear
Reconnect the wiring harness. Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 517960-06 fault code.
Calibration
Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure via the tractor's display or scan tool. This is critical, as the controller must learn the fill times and pressures for the new solenoid to prevent harsh shifting or clutch slippage.
