517960-16 - DEC

Case IH 517960-16 - DEC – DEC: Transmission A1 clutch solenoid data is valid, but above the normal operating range (moderately severe)

Issue description

Indicates that the maximum current limit has been exceeded on the transmission A1 clutch solenoid electrical circuit or the solenoid is in an uncalibrated state. This points to either an electrical short causing excessive current draw or a loss of clutch calibration data.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 180 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 310 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 340 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Check the DEC to see if the transmission calibration data has been lost or interrupted

  2. Check the electrical circuit for the A1 clutch solenoid for a short to ground or a short to power

  3. Measure the resistance (ohms) of the A1 clutch solenoid coil to check for an internal short

  4. Inspect the wiring harness between the DEC and the transmission control valve block for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor to verify the active 517960-16 fault code in the DEC.

  2. Perform Calibration

Initiate the transmission clutch calibration procedure via the tractor's AFS Pro display or the EST. If the calibration completes successfully and the code clears, the issue was purely software/calibration-related.

  3. Test the Solenoid

If the code remains active or fails calibration due to high current, disconnect the A1 clutch solenoid harness connector. Use a multimeter to test the solenoid's internal resistance.

  4. Replace Solenoid

If the solenoid is internally shorted (causing the high current draw), remove the retaining hardware on the transmission valve block, extract the faulty A1 solenoid, and install a replacement.

  5. Repair Wiring

If the solenoid tests within specification, trace the wiring back to the DEC. Repair any shorted wires in the harness.

  6. Recalibrate

After replacing the solenoid or repairing the wiring, clear the fault codes and perform a full transmission clutch calibration.

  7. Test Drive

Operate the tractor to ensure the transmission shifts smoothly through the ranges utilizing the A1 clutch and verify the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission A1 Clutch Solenoid / Proportional Valve Solenoid

Reference the specific CNH Industrial parts catalog using the tractor's exact model and serial number to obtain the correct solenoid part number.
