Case IH 517961-03 - DEC – DEC (Drivetrain Electronic Controller): Transmission A3 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage above normal
Issue description
The controller has detected that the voltage in the electrical circuit for the transmission's A3 clutch solenoid is higher than the normal operating range. This typically indicates a "short to power" in the wiring harness, an internal short within the solenoid coil itself, or a malfunction within the controller's output circuit.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the DEC module to the transmission control valve block for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched areas that could cause a short to a 12V power source.
Disconnect the harness at the A3 clutch solenoid and the DEC module connector to inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the A3 clutch solenoid and compare to OEM specifications to check for an internal short.
With the solenoid disconnected and the key ON, probe the harness-side connector to see if voltage is present on the control wire when it shouldn't be, verifying a short to power in the harness.
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Ensure the machine is safe to work on before beginning electrical or hydraulic repairs.
Locate the transmission control valve manifold (usually mounted on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the specific A3 clutch solenoid using the OEM service manual diagram.
Proper identification is critical as flow rates and connector types can differ between the various clutch packs on the manifold.
Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt and debris from entering the transmission valve body.
Cleanliness is essential when working with transmission hydraulics.
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the A3 solenoid.
Remove the retaining bolt, bracket, or snap ring securing the solenoid to the valve block.
Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body. Have a rag ready to catch any residual hydraulic/transmission fluid.
Discard the old solenoid and its O-rings.
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Case IH Hy-Tran (or equivalent) transmission fluid.
Insert the new solenoid into the valve body, ensuring it seats fully. Reinstall the retaining bolt/bracket and torque to OEM specifications.
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the AFS Pro display (or a diagnostic tool) to clear the DEC fault codes.
Depending on the transmission type (Powershift vs. CVT), perform a transmission clutch calibration via the display if required. Test drive the tractor to verify smooth shifting and ensure the code does not return.
