Case IH 517961-04 - DEC – DEC: Transmission A3 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault - Voltage below normal

The controller is detecting an abnormally low voltage on the circuit for the A3 clutch solenoid, which typically points to a short to ground, an open circuit, or a failed solenoid coil.

   Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the DEC to the transmission control valve block. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or areas where the wire might be shorting to the tractor chassis (ground).

   Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the A3 clutch solenoid. Check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins inside the connector.

   Resistance Test: Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the A3 clutch solenoid coil. An infinite reading indicates an open internal coil, while a reading of zero (or near zero) indicates an internal short.

   Voltage Supply Test: With the key on, check the supply voltage at the harness connector to ensure the DEC is sending the proper signal to the solenoid.

   Prep the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery power.

   Locate the Valve Block

   Locate the transmission solenoid valve block on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the specific A3 clutch solenoid.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission housing when the valve is removed.

   Remove the Solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt(s) or hex socket plug holding the solenoid in place. Pull the solenoid out of the valve body.

   Install the New Solenoid

   Discard the old O-rings. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and torque the retaining bolt to spec.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key on and clear the 517961-04 fault code from the DEC using the tractor's display or a diagnostic tool.

   Transmission Calibration

   A clutch calibration must be performed after replacing a transmission solenoid. Access the calibration menu on the tractor's display, select 'Clutch Cal', and press enter. When prompted, shift the lever to forward. The engine will idle up and stabilize, and the transmission will cycle through the clutches (e.g., F1, F4, R1, etc.) until it finds the correct fill volumes and calibration numbers.
