Case IH 517961-05 - DEC – DEC: Transmission A3 clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault current below normal

Issue description

The control module is detecting a lack of electrical continuity in the circuit for the A3 transmission clutch solenoid. The underlying cause is typically a broken wire, an unplugged or corroded harness connector, or a burnt-out solenoid coil.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the A3 clutch solenoid for unplugged connectors, chafed or broken wires, and pushed-out pins.

  2. Perform a Solenoid Resistance Test (Ohm Test) by disconnecting the connector and measuring resistance across the solenoid pins (healthy is ~5.2 ohms; 'OL' indicates a burnt-out coil).

  3. Perform a Harness Continuity Test between the DEC module and the solenoid connector to check for a short to ground or a broken signal wire.

  4. Perform a Voltage/Activation Test with the key on to verify the DEC is sending the correct voltage (typically 12V) to the solenoid when commanded.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn the engine off, and engage the parking brake. Ensure the transmission fluid is not hot enough to cause burns.

  2. Access the Valve Block

    Locate the transmission control valve manifold where the A3 clutch solenoid is housed (often located on the side or top of the transmission housing beneath the cab).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the faulty A3 solenoid.

  4. Removal

    Remove the retaining nut or bolt securing the solenoid coil/cartridge to the valve body. Pull the solenoid straight out. Have a drain pan ready to catch any residual transmission fluid.

  5. Installation

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid cartridge with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and torque the retaining fastener to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks and locks into place.

  7. Clear Codes & Calibrate

    Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive 517961-05 fault code. Finally, perform a transmission clutch calibration. Note: Calibration generally requires the transmission fluid to be at operating temperature (75°C-80°C), the engine running between 800-1200 RPM, and the parking brake engaged.
