Case IH 517961-06 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Transmission A3 Clutch Solenoid Current Above Normal or Grounded Circuit

The control module has detected that the electrical current flowing through the A3 clutch solenoid circuit is higher than the expected normal operating range, indicating a short to ground in the signal wire or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission ECU to the A3 clutch solenoid for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points against the transmission housing that could cause a short to ground.

   Perform a solenoid resistance test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the A3 clutch solenoid and measure the resistance (Ohms) across the solenoid coil pins. If the reading is 0 or near 0, the coil is internally shorted.

   Perform a harness short-to-ground test: With the solenoid and ECU disconnected, measure for continuity between the solenoid's positive signal wire and the chassis ground. Continuity indicates a short to ground in the wiring harness.

   Secure machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   Locate solenoid

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side or top of the transmission housing and identify the A3 clutch solenoid.

   Clean area

   Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission valve body.

   Disconnect electrical connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the A3 solenoid.

   Remove retaining hardware

   Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the solenoid in place.

   Remove faulty solenoid

   Carefully pull the faulty solenoid out of the valve block.

   Lubricate O-rings

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM replacement solenoid with clean transmission fluid.

   Install new solenoid

   Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.

   Reconnect electrical connector

   Reconnect the electrical connector.

    Clear codes and test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or in-cab display, and test drive the machine to verify proper A3 clutch engagement.
