517961-13 - DEC

Case IH 517961-13 - DEC – DEC: Transmission A3 clutch solenoid out of calibration

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected that the A3 clutch solenoid has lost its calibration values or the current calibration is no longer valid for smooth engagement, which can result in harsh shifting or hydrostatic instability.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 340

Check the cause

  1. Verify if there are other active 517961-series codes (e.g., 517961-06, 517961-04, or 517961-00) indicating a hard electrical issue (short/open circuit) in the A3 solenoid wiring that must be fixed before calibration

  2. Check transmission fluid temperature; it must be warmed to between 60 °C and 105 °C (140 °F+) for successful calibration

  3. Ensure the tractor is parked on a flat surface in an open area, free of obstacles, with the parking brake engaged, as the machine may attempt to move during calibration

Repair steps

  1. Warm transmission oil

Start the tractor and warm the transmission oil to at least 60 °C (140 °F).

  2. Access CONFIG MENU

Turn the key switch to the ON position. Within ten seconds, press and hold the Enter key on the keypad to bring up the CONFIG MENU.

  3. Select TCU

Use the down arrow key to highlight TCU in the menu list and press Enter.

  4. Access ETC MENU

Scroll down to the ETC MENU screen and press Enter to access the transmission sub-menus (TRANS VIEW will display).

  5. Access TRANS SETUP

Scroll down until the TRANS SETUP screen displays, and press Enter.

  6. Select Clutch Calibration

Select the Cltch Cal (clutch calibration) screen and press Enter.

  7. Verify oil temperature

The display will show Oil Deg (current hydraulic fluid temperature in Celsius). If the temperature is within the 60 - 105 °C range, press Enter to proceed.

  8. Perform calibration

Follow the on-screen prompts to allow the DEC to cycle and calibrate the A3 clutch (along with the other transmission clutches). Maintain a stable engine RPM as directed by the display.

  9. Evaluate calibration results

If the calibration fails repeatedly, or if the tractor is plugging transmission filters and chattering, the A3 clutch pack may be mechanically worn, or the solenoid valve itself has failed and requires replacement.
