517961-16 - DEC

Case IH 517961-16 - DEC – DEC: Transmission A3 clutch solenoid uncalibrated

Issue description

Indicates that the Transmission A3 clutch solenoid is uncalibrated (517961-16) or has an electrical circuit fault - Voltage high (517961-17).

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect Tier 3
  • Puma CVX

Check the cause

  1. Verify the calibration status of the transmission clutches using the electronic service tool (EST) or in-cab display (for 517961-16 uncalibrated code)

  2. Check the wiring harness between the DEC and the A3 clutch solenoid for a short to power (if diagnosing related 517961-17 high voltage code)

  3. Inspect the solenoid connector for corrosion, damaged pins, or water ingress that could bridge voltage to the signal wire

Repair steps

  1. Perform clutch calibration

If addressing 517961-16: Perform the transmission clutch calibration procedure via the tractor's AFS Pro display or CNH Electronic Service Tool. Ensure the transmission fluid is at the correct operating temperature before initiating the calibration.

  2. Disconnect solenoid

If addressing 517961-17: Disconnect the A3 clutch solenoid.

  3. Test harness voltage

Turn the key to the ON position and probe the harness side for voltage. If voltage is inappropriately high on the ground/return circuit, trace the harness back to the DEC to locate and repair the short to battery voltage.

  4. Test solenoid resistance

If the wiring tests good, test the internal resistance of the A3 solenoid itself. If it is internally shorted, replace the solenoid.

  5. Perform clutch calibration

After replacing the solenoid or repairing the wiring, you must perform a clutch calibration (which resolves the subsequent -16 code).

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission A3 Clutch Solenoid / Proportional Shift Valve Solenoid

When ordering through a Case IH / CNH dealer, you will need to specify the exact transmission variant (e.g., 21x5 transmission) for the Magnum AFS Connect to ensure the correct proportional solenoid is provided.
