Case IH 517961-17 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission A3 clutch solenoid minimum calibration current limit exceeded

Issue description

Occurs during a transmission calibration routine when the current drawn by the 'A3' clutch solenoid exceeds the programmed minimum threshold. This typically indicates an electrical issue (such as a short to voltage, high resistance, or a failing coil inside the solenoid) or a mechanical binding issue preventing the solenoid valve from stroking properly.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum (Series 4)
  • Maxxum
  • TG series

Check the cause

  1. Check the transmission/hydraulic oil level and condition for overheating or contamination.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the transmission controller to the transmission valve body for wires that have failed open, shorted to ground, or shorted to +12 Volts.

  3. Perform 'Swapnostics' by swapping the A3 solenoid with a neighboring, identical clutch solenoid (e.g., A1 or A2), clearing codes, and re-running calibration to isolate if the fault is in the solenoid or the wiring/TCU.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve pressure

Relieve hydraulic pressure and clean the area around the transmission valve body.

  2. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty A3 clutch solenoid.

  3. Remove solenoid

Remove the retaining bolts/snap rings and extract the solenoid valve from the manifold.

  4. Install replacement

Install the replacement solenoid and replace any associated O-rings.

  5. Reconnect and fill

Reconnect the harness and top off transmission fluid if any was lost.

  6. Calibrate

Re-run the transmission calibration routine via the cab display to allow the TCU to learn the engagement current of the new solenoid.

Verify with a Case IH parts catalog using your machine's serial number to find the exact part number for the 'A3' position, as solenoid part numbers vary heavily by transmission type.
