Case IH 517962-06 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission Low Clutch Solenoid electrical circuit has a current above normal

The controller is detecting an excessive current draw on the circuit. This typically means the low clutch solenoid coil is internally shorted, or the wiring harness supplying the solenoid is shorted to a +12V power source or shorted to ground while the driver/controller is commanding it to be off.

   Locate the transmission powershift valve manifold on top of the range transmission to identify the Low Clutch Solenoid.

   Disconnect the harness at the Low Clutch Solenoid (Connector No. 36) and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals.

   Using a multimeter, test the harness side of Connector 36 for a short to ground or a short to +12V.

   Measure the resistance across the pins of the low clutch solenoid itself. If the resistance is near zero, the solenoid has an internal dead short and must be replaced.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Valve Block

   Clean the area around the transmission powershift valve manifold on top of the range transmission to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Unplug Connector No. 36 from the Low Clutch Solenoid.

   Remove the Solenoid

   Remove the retaining nut/bracket holding the solenoid coil and cartridge valve in place. Carefully extract the solenoid cartridge from the manifold.

   Install New Parts

   Lubricate the new O-rings with clean transmission hydraulic fluid. Install the new O-rings onto the new solenoid cartridge.

   Insert the Solenoid

   Carefully thread/push the new Low Clutch Solenoid into the manifold and tighten to the specified torque (refer to standard hydraulic fitting torque specs if a specific value is not listed).

   Reconnect

   Plug Connector No. 36 back into the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Clear the stored fault codes from the TCU. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure to ensure the TCU learns the engagement profile of the new low clutch solenoid.
