Case IH 517962-13 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission Low Clutch Solenoid Out of Calibration
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected that the low clutch solenoid (or the clutch pack it controls) is out of calibration. This happens when the calibration values are outside the expected parameters, or if a calibration procedure was aborted or never successfully completed.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Magnum Series (215, 235, 245, 275, 290, 305, 340)
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Series
- Case IH Puma and Maxxum Series
Check the cause
Check transmission fluid temperature — ensure it is at the correct operating temperature (140°F - 160°F / 60°C - 105°C). Attempting to calibrate with cold oil will trigger this code.
Check regulated transmission pressure (e.g., 2070 to 2300 kPa @ 1500 RPM). Low pressure will negatively affect clutch fill times.
Perform a leakage test by observing pressure drops when shifting through the gears to check for clutch element leakage.
Visually inspect the wiring harness from the transmission controller (rear of tractor) to the solenoids (under the cab). Look for abnormal routing, wire damage, or shorts.
Perform a solenoid swap test: swap the electrical connectors between the low clutch solenoid and the mid clutch solenoid, then run the calibration again. If the fault follows the solenoid, the solenoid is defective. If it stays with the low clutch circuit, the issue is in the wiring or TCU.
Repair steps
Prepare machine
Park the tractor on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and ensure the area around the machine is clear.
Warm transmission oil
Warm the transmission oil to at least 140°F (60°C) by driving the tractor and shifting through 5th through 14th and reverse gears.
Enter CONFIG MENU
Turn the key switch to the ON position. Within ten seconds, press and hold the Program/Enter key on the A-post or armrest keypad to enter the CONFIG MENU.
Navigate to Clutch Calibration
Use the arrow keys to navigate to TCU -> ETC MENU -> TRANS SETUP -> Cltch Cal (Clutch Calibration).
Confirm oil temperature
The screen will display the oil temperature. If it is within range, press Enter to continue.
Set engine speed
Set the engine speed to the specified RPM (usually 1100-1200 RPM or higher).
Initiate calibration
Shift the transmission into forward gear as prompted. The controller will begin calibrating the clutch packs.
Observe calibration progress
Observe the display; the mA readings will change as the TCU finds the clutch bite point. Once the low clutch is calibrated (often indicated by an asterisk), proceed through the rest of the clutches.
Save calibration values
Crucial Step: When finished, do not simply hit 'Reset' to exit. Scroll through the menus until you find EXIT, and hit Program/Enter to properly save the calibration values to the TCU.
Address calibration failure
If the tractor lunges violently during calibration or the calibration repeatedly fails, the low clutch solenoid valve must be replaced, or the internal clutch pack requires mechanical repair.
