Case IH 518083-03 - DEC – DEC: Park Brake Pressure Sensor Voltage Above Normal

Issue description

The voltage signal from the Park Brake Pressure Sensor is reading above the normal operating range, indicating the sensor's signal circuit is shorted to a power source, the sensor has an internal short, or the sensor's ground circuit is open.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the sensor connector and the wiring harness leading to the DEC for physical damage, rubbed-through insulation, or moisture/corrosion inside the pins.

  2. Check for a short to power by disconnecting the sensor, turning the key to the ON position, and measuring the voltage on the signal wire. A high reading (5V or 12V) indicates the wiring harness is shorted to power.

  3. Check the ground circuit by measuring the resistance between the sensor connector's ground pin and the chassis/ECU ground. An open ground circuit will cause the signal voltage to spike.

  4. If the 5V reference is correct, the ground is solid, and the signal wire has continuity back to the DEC without shorting, the sensor itself has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

    Park the tractor/combine on a flat, level surface. Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and chock the wheels.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the park brake pressure sensor, which is threaded into the park brake valve block (usually located near the transmission housing or hydraulic pump stack).

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor with brake cleaner to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical harness. Using a wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty sensor. Have a shop rag ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid will leak from the port.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM pressure sensor into the valve block and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks securely.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

    Turn the key ON. Use the Case IH Pro 1200 monitor (via the 'Faults and Warnings' menu) or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault code. Start the machine, cycle the parking brake, check for hydraulic leaks, and verify the code does not return.
