Case IH 518107-06 - BCM – BCM: Work lamp #3 - short circuit to ground

A "short circuit to ground" occurs when an active electrical circuit or wire comes into direct contact with a ground connection, such as the machine's mainframe, bypassing the intended load. This condition typically causes unwanted power draw, blown fuses, or disabled circuits to protect the system.

   Safety First: Before dismounting or performing electrical checks, lower all attachments and implements to the ground, place the tractor in neutral, engage the parking brake, shut off the engine, and remove the key.

   Visual Inspection of Connectors: Disconnect the Work Lamp #3 connector. Inspect the male and female pins and cavities for corrosion, moisture, or bent/broken pins that could be touching and causing a short.

   Continuity/Resistance Testing: Use a multimeter (ohmmeter) to perform a continuity check on the circuit. Test the power supply wire for Work Lamp #3 against the tractor's mainframe (ground). If continuity is present while the lamp is disconnected, the short is located within the wiring harness.

   Component Testing: If the wiring harness tests normal, the short circuit to ground may be internal to the Work Lamp #3 assembly itself.

   Isolate the Circuit

   Ensure the tractor is powered off and the battery disconnect switch is engaged to prevent electrical arcing during repair.

   Examine the Harness

   Trace the wiring harness from Work Lamp #3 back toward the Body Control Module (BCM). Look for areas where the wire insulation may have rubbed against the tractor frame, causing exposed copper to touch the metal chassis.

   Repair the Wiring

   If a chafed or pinched wire is found, cut out the damaged section, splice in a new section of wire using proper weather-sealed connectors, and wrap the harness in protective loom or electrical tape.

   Replace the Lamp (if applicable)

   If the harness is intact and the multimeter indicates the short is inside the lamp housing, unbolt the Work Lamp #3 assembly and install a replacement unit.

   Clear and Verify

   Reconnect all harnesses, replace any blown fuses in the BCM fuse panel, turn the key on, and activate the work lamps via the cab switch or AFS Pro 1200 monitor to verify the fault code 518107-06 has cleared.
