Case IH 518288-02 - VCM – VCM: Steering valve coil power switch mismatch

The controller is detecting an electrical mismatch, voltage irregularity, or internal logic failure regarding the power being supplied to the steering valve coils. The system expects a specific voltage/state from the coil power switch, and the actual reading is disagreeing with the commanded state.

   Check the wiring harness between the VCM and the steering valve for physical damage, chafing, or corrosion.

   Verify the power supply and ground circuits to the Steering Valve Controller and the steering valve coils.

   Test the steering valve coil power switch for an electrical mismatch, short to ground, or open circuit.

   Check for related CAN communication codes (e.g., 'VCM Controller CAN Did Not Start') which might indicate a broader network issue rather than an isolated valve fault.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery before servicing the VCM or steering hydraulics.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks reveal a short or open circuit in the harness, repair or replace the affected wiring harness section connecting the VCM to the steering valve.

   Replace Component

   If the harness is intact and the coil power switch mismatch or internal fault persists, the Steering Valve Controller (VCM) or the Steering Valve assembly itself must be replaced.

   Calibration

   After replacing the controller or the steering valve, you must perform a steering valve calibration and CAN wheel angle sensor calibration using the Case IH diagnostic tool. A factory reset of the module configuration may also be required.
