Case IH 518313-06 - VCM – VCM: Rear hitch side link extend solenoid circuit fault
Issue description
Indicates a circuit fault with the Rear hitch side link extend solenoid. The underlying condition is a hard electrical failure in the solenoid coil or its wiring harness (either a short to ground causing excessive current draw, or a broken/open wire).
Applies to these machines
2 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum 400 AFS Connect
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the VCM to the rear hitch side link extend solenoid for pinched wires, chafing against the tractor frame, or melted insulation.
Disconnect the solenoid connector and inspect for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil to check for an internal short (near zero) or open circuit (infinite).
Test the continuity of the wiring harness between the solenoid connector and the VCM pins to isolate a break or short in the harness.
Repair steps
Power down the tractor, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the rear hitch side link extend solenoid on the rear hydraulic remote/hitch valve block assembly.
Depress the locking tab and unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.
If the fault is in the wiring: Repair any chafed or broken wires in the harness using solder and marine-grade heat shrink, or replace the damaged harness section.
If the fault is a failed solenoid: Remove the retaining nut or snap-ring securing the solenoid coil to the hydraulic valve cartridge.
Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve stem.
Note: You typically do not need to open the hydraulic system or remove the cartridge valve just to replace the electrical coil.
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut/clip.
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid.
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the Pro 1200 display or a diagnostic tool to clear the VCM fault codes.
Test the rear hitch side link extension function to verify the repair.
