518390-01 - DEC

Case IH 518390-01 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle/Chassis Control Module: Park brake primary valve solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage low

Issue description

The controller is detecting that the voltage returning from the parking brake solenoid circuit is lower than the expected threshold. This typically points to a short to ground in the wiring harness, a cracked or internally shorted solenoid coil, severe corrosion at the connector causing high resistance/voltage drop, or low overall system voltage.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum series (235, 275, 340)
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Axial-Flow series (2166, 2188, 2388, 5088, 6140, 7140, 7240)
  • Case backhoes
  • Case loaders

Check the cause

  1. System Voltage Check: Verify that the battery voltage is sufficient and the alternator is charging properly.

  2. Visual Inspection: Locate the parking brake solenoid and inspect the plastic body of the solenoid coil for hairline cracks.

  3. Harness & Connector Test: Disconnect the solenoid, check the connector pins for corrosion or pushed-out pins, and use a multimeter to check for continuity and ensure there is no short to ground in the wiring harness.

  4. Coil Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins to verify if it reads out of specification or shows a dead short.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Ensure the equipment is on level ground. Chock the wheels or tracks securely, as you will be working on the braking system.

  2. Locate the Valve

Access the transmission valve body or the specific parking brake/feeder clutch valve block.

  3. Disconnect Power

Turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent accidental shorting.

  4. Remove the Solenoid Coil

Disconnect the electrical pigtail from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or snap-ring at the end of the valve stem.

  5. Slide Off the Coil

Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (If the cartridge itself is leaking or sticking, you may need to unthread the entire cartridge valve, but usually, only the 12V coil fails electrically).

  6. Install the New Part

Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem, secure it with the retaining nut, and plug in the electrical connector.

  7. Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes via the cab monitor, and test the parking brake engagement and disengagement.
