Case IH 518390-03 - DEC – DEC: Park Brake Solenoid Voltage High
Issue description
The system has detected that the voltage on the park brake primary valve solenoid circuit is higher than the expected operating range. This indicates a 'Voltage Above Normal, Or Shorted To High Source' condition, meaning the circuit is likely shorted to battery/power, or the solenoid coil itself has failed internally.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the primary valve solenoid coil on the transmission for physical cracks, swelling, or heat damage (checking for internal solenoid failure cause). Note: A known issue on Magnum and Steiger tractors is the physical cracking of the park brake solenoid coil, which can cause the tractor to abruptly drop into park at field speeds.
Trace the wiring harness from the DEC controller to the park brake solenoid, looking for rubbed-through insulation (checking for harness short to power cause).
Disconnect the solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.
Measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil with a multimeter. An out of specification reading (open limit or dead short) confirms the internal solenoid failure cause.
With the key on and the solenoid disconnected, probe the harness-side connector to verify if constant high voltage is present when it shouldn't be (confirming the harness short to power cause).
Repair steps
Secure the machine
Park the tractor on a flat, level surface and chock the wheels securely, as servicing the park brake valve can cause the brake to release or engage unexpectedly.
Disconnect power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes and accidental shorts.
Access the valve
Locate the park brake valve block assembly, typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing.
Remove the faulty solenoid
If diagnosing the internal solenoid failure cause: Unplug the electrical connector from the primary park brake solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid cartridge stem and slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve stem. (If the cartridge valve itself is leaking or damaged, the hydraulic system will need to be relieved and the cartridge unthreaded, but for an electrical code, usually only the coil needs replacing).
Install the new solenoid
If diagnosing the internal solenoid failure cause: Slide the new solenoid coil over the valve stem and tighten the retaining nut to the OEM torque spec.
Repair wiring harness
If diagnosing the harness short to power cause: Cut out the damaged wire section, solder in a replacement wire, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink and protective wire loom.
Reassemble and clear codes
Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery. Use the AFS Pro display or the Case IH EST to clear the inactive DEC fault codes.
Test operation
Start the tractor and cycle the electronic park brake switch several times to ensure the brake engages and disengages smoothly and the 518390-03 code does not return.
