Case IH 518390-06 - DEC – Transmission Controller (Transmission ECU / TMF): Primary parking brake solenoid valve - current above normal or short to ground
Issue description
The controller is detecting an excessive electrical current draw on the circuit responsible for the primary parking brake solenoid. This is typically caused by a wiring harness rubbing against the chassis (creating a short to ground) or an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause
Operational Test: With the tractor running, move the transmission control lever to the 'Park' position. Verify if the 'P' icon is displayed on the transmission gear display. Move the lever to the neutral position and verify the icon disappears. If the icon stays on constantly, the circuit is grounded.
Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness leading from the transmission controller to the parking brake valve block. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines that could cause a short to the tractor's frame.
Electrical Testing: Disconnect the primary parking brake solenoid. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. If the resistance is near zero, the solenoid is internally shorted. Next, check the harness-side connector for continuity to ground on the power supply wire. If there is continuity to ground while disconnected from the solenoid, the wiring harness is the culprit.
Repair steps
Park the machine on a flat, level surface and securely chock the wheels, as you will be working on the parking brake system.
Turn off the engine and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.
Locate the parking brake valve assembly (usually mounted near the transmission housing or hydraulic distribution block).
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the primary parking brake solenoid.
Clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, and slide the faulty solenoid off.
Install the new solenoid coil, ensuring any O-rings or weather seals are properly seated.
Torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications (do not overtighten, as this can distort the valve spool).
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Start the tractor, clear the inactive fault codes from the Transmission Controller, and cycle the parking brake to ensure proper engagement and disengagement.
