Case IH 518390-16 - DEC – DEC: Park brake primary valve solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage high
Issue description
The control module has detected an abnormally high voltage on the circuit responsible for actuating the park brake primary valve solenoid. This condition typically points to a short to power (B+) in the wiring harness, a failing solenoid coil that has lost its proper internal resistance, or an internal fault within the controller itself. When this fault occurs, the transmission may lock into park or refuse to shift into gear as a safety precaution.

Check the cause
Verify System Voltage: Ensure the alternator is not overcharging the system, which can trigger "voltage high" codes across multiple modules.
Inspect the Harness: Trace the wiring harness from the DEC to the park brake solenoid on the transmission valve block. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched areas where the solenoid power wire might be shorting to a 12V source.
Test the Solenoid Coil: Disconnect the park brake solenoid connector. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the coil pins. If the coil is shorted internally or shows resistance outside of the OEM specification, it cannot stay magnetized and is failing.
Check the Connector: Inspect the solenoid connector for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.
Check the FNRP Switch: Ensure the Forward/Neutral/Reverse/Park (FNRP) shuttle switch is not sending illogical signals to the controller, which can sometimes trigger cascading park brake faults.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Turn off the engine, remove the key, and chock the wheels. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Locate the Valve
Locate the transmission control valve block (usually on the side or top of the transmission housing, depending on if it is a Magnum or Steiger). Identify the park brake primary valve solenoid.
Remove the Solenoid Coil
Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem.
Inspect the Cartridge
Slide the electromagnetic coil off the valve cartridge. If the pilot head/cartridge is leaking hydraulic fluid into the coil or is physically damaged, the entire cartridge valve must be replaced.
Install the New Part
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and tighten the retaining nut to the specified torque.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Start the tractor and test the FNRP lever to ensure the park brake engages and disengages properly.
Clear Codes
The fault may move to an "inactive" state after a successful test. Depending on the software version, it may require the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to permanently clear the code from the DEC memory, or it may clear itself after 10 hours of operation.

Dealer mechanics note that the pilot heads on these valves are prone to failure. It is often recommended to replace the entire cartridge valve rather than just the coil if the tractor has high hours, as an internal mechanical failure in the pilot head will cause the new coil to fail or the brake to lock up again.
