Case IH 518391-05 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) / DECU: Park Brake Detent Solenoid - Current Below Normal or Open Circuit
Issue description
The control module has detected that the electrical circuit for the park brake detent solenoid is open or drawing less current than expected. This typically means there is a broken wire, a disconnected plug, a blown fuse, or the internal copper coil of the solenoid has burned out and failed open. When this occurs, the park brake may fail to release, or the tractor may refuse to move out of park to prevent damage.

Check the cause
Check the specific fuse for the park brake/transmission solenoids (e.g., Fuse 43 on some Magnum models) to see if it is blown.
Inspect the 2-pin connector and harness at the park brake detent solenoid (under the cab on the transmission valve block) for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or wire chafing.
Test solenoid resistance by disconnecting it and using a multimeter across the two pins. An 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance reading indicates the coil is internally broken.
Test circuit voltage with the key ON and the park brake commanded to release. Check for 12V at the harness side of the connector to rule out wiring harness or cab switch issues.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the engine and turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position for at least 30 seconds to allow the modules to power down.
Locate the Solenoid
Access the transmission control valve block where the park brake detent solenoid is mounted.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.
Remove the Coil
Most detent solenoid coils are secured by a retaining nut or a snap ring at the end of the valve stem. Remove the retaining hardware.
Replace
Slide the faulty coil off the valve cartridge. Slide the new OEM coil onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut (do not overtighten, as this can distort the coil).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather seal is intact and the locking tab clicks.
Test
Turn the battery disconnect back on, start the tractor, and cycle the park brake switch. Verify that the fault code clears and the tractor successfully engages and disengages the park brake.
