Case IH 518391-16 - DEC – DEC: Park brake detent solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage high
Issue description
The controller detects that the current/voltage in the park brake detent solenoid circuit is above normal operating parameters. This typically points to a short to ground, a short to power/battery, or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading from the DEC module to the park brake detent solenoid for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points
Disconnect the solenoid and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or damage
Measure the resistance of the park brake detent solenoid coil (a reading of zero or near-zero ohms indicates an internal short)
Check the harness side for continuity to ground (continuity to chassis ground while disconnected indicates a harness short)
Verify that the supply voltage to the solenoid is within the normal 12V specification and not shorted directly to the battery
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, engage the mechanical park brake lock (if applicable), and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the park brake detent solenoid on the transmission/driveline hydraulic control valve block.
Isolate the Fault
Based on your multimeter diagnostics, determine if the short is in the wiring harness or the solenoid itself.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the harness is shorted to ground, locate the chafed section of the wire, splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed connectors, and re-loom the harness securely away from vibration points.
Replace Solenoid (If Applicable)
If the solenoid coil is internally shorted (current above normal), remove the retaining nut/bolt, slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem, and install the new replacement coil. Torque to OEM specifications.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the electrical connector, reconnect the battery, and power on the machine. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the AFS Pro display to clear the inactive DEC fault codes.
Test Operation
Cycle the park brake switch multiple times to ensure the detent solenoid engages and disengages properly without throwing the 518391-16 code.
