Case IH 518394-05 - VCM – VCM: Trailer brake pedal control solenoid current low
Issue description
The control module is detecting an open circuit, abnormally high resistance, or a disconnected wire in the trailer brake solenoid circuit. Note: An official Case IH document also defines this code as 'Fan speed sensor reading indicates zero speed with engine running'.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum 400 AFS Connect (Tier 3)
- Puma (185–260 CVX)
- Maxxum
- Optum
Check the cause
Check the wiring harness for open circuits or high resistance between the VCM and the trailer brake pedal control solenoid.
Verify the presence and correct connection of the controller to the network, and check its voltage supply.
Check for a proper ground connection on the power cables.
Repair steps
Inspect wiring and connectors
Inspect the wiring and connectors leading to the trailer brake pedal control solenoid for open circuits, corrosion, or physical damage.
Check ground and power
Check the ground connections and power supply to the VCM and the solenoid.
Diagnose internal failure
If the wiring and grounds are intact, the fault is likely an internal failure of the solenoid valve assembly or the VCM itself.
Replace solenoid/valve
Replace the faulty trailer brake solenoid/valve if it has failed internally.
Erase fault code and retest
Erase the fault code from the VCM and retest the trailer brake system to ensure the code does not return.
