Case IH 518413-09 - ACM – ACM: Navigation encoder keypad disconnected while powered on.
Issue description
This fault indicates that the control module has detected an open circuit or a sudden loss of communication with the navigation encoder keypad (the dial button encoder used to navigate the AFS Pro 1200 or AFS Pro 700 monitor) while the machine's electrical system was actively powered on.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum AFS Connect series
- Steiger AFS Connect series
- Quadtrac AFS Connect series
- Optum AFS Connect series
- Puma Multicontroller models
- Farmlift Telehandlers (2024+ models)
Check the cause
Verify if the armrest panel was recently disassembled, serviced, or unplugged without first keying off the machine and disconnecting the battery.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the navigation encoder keypad and the ACM for loose connector pins, backed-out wires, or physical damage inside the Multicontroller armrest.
Scan the ACM for other 518413-series codes using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for related internal failures or configuration issues (e.g., 518413-19, 518413-06, 518413-14, 518413-03, 518413-01, 518413-00).
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn the key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the machine's battery to prevent further electrical spikes or module damage.
Access the Armrest Components
Carefully remove the trim panels on the Multicontroller armrest to access the underside of the navigation encoder knob/keypad assembly.
Reseat Connections
Disconnect the electrical connector at the navigation encoder keypad. Inspect the pins for corrosion or bent terminals. Apply dielectric grease if permitted by OEM guidelines, and firmly reconnect the plug until it clicks into place.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the wiring between the encoder and the ACM is pinched or broken, repair the wiring harness according to Case IH electrical standards.
Component Replacement
If the wiring is intact but the encoder has suffered an internal failure (often accompanied by codes 518413-03 or 518413-01), remove the retaining screws holding the encoder keypad to the armrest console and install a new encoder unit.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery, power on the machine, and use the EST or the AFS Pro 1200 display to clear the inactive 518413-09 fault code. Rotate and press the navigation encoder to verify it successfully controls the monitor without logging new faults.
Parts you might need
(1)Case IH Navigation Encoder / Dial Button Encoder / Armrest Encoder Keypad
Typically serviced as a sub-component of the Multicontroller armrest assembly or the AFS Vision Pro operating system hardware. Ensure the replacement encoder matches the specific transmission layout (e.g., PowerDrive vs. CVXDrive).
